See if you can find the first, fourth and fifth degrees. These are the roots of the I, IV and V (“one, four and five”) chords we’ll use in almost everything we do.
To find the right Blues chords to play in any key,
- write the notes in the scale (the musical alphabet, starting from the letter of the key name).
- write the degree number under the notes
- circle the first, fourth and fifth notes
For another example, G:
G has 1 sharp, F#.
G A B C D E F# G A B…

The I IV and V in the key of G are G, C and D. Bonus: What’s the 7th? Flat 7th?
