What we’re up to:

Degrees of the Scale

See if you can find the first, fourth and fifth degrees. These are the roots of the I, IV and V (“one, four and five”) chords we’ll use in almost everything we do.

To find the right Blues chords to play in any key,

  1. write the notes in the scale (the musical alphabet, starting from the letter of the key name).
  2. write the degree number under the notes
  3. circle the first, fourth and fifth notes

For another example, G:
G has 1 sharp, F#.
G   A   B   C   D   E   F#   G   A   B…
1   2   3   4   5   6   7   Oct  9   10…

The I IV and V in the key of G are G, C and D. Bonus: What’s the 7th? Flat 7th?
To discover the rest of the notes in each chord we have to learn about triads.
